He has been awarded the Fields Medal, known as the <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2018-08-01\/fields-medals-to-be-awarded-to-best-mathematical-minds\/10049510\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Nobel Prize for mathematics&#8221;<\/a> \u2014 awarded once every four years to between two and four people under the age of 40. It is an amazing achievement for the 36-year-old, who was described as a &#8220;prodigy&#8221; and a &#8220;genius&#8221; during his teenage years in Perth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwip.com.au\/hcaold\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/AkshayVenkatesh.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-9437 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwip.com.au\/hcaold\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/AkshayVenkatesh.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"145\" height=\"186\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Venkatesh was born in <a title=\"Delhi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Delhi\">Delhi<\/a>, India, to a <a title=\"Tamils\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tamils\">Tamil<\/a> family who moved to <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Perth, Western Australia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Perth,_Western_Australia\">Perth<\/a> in <a title=\"Western Australia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Western_Australia\">Western Australia<\/a> when he was two years old. He attended <a title=\"Scotch College, Perth\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scotch_College,_Perth\">Scotch College<\/a>. His mother, <a title=\"Svetha Venkatesh\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Svetha_Venkatesh\">Svetha<\/a>, is a <a title=\"Computer science\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Computer_science\">computer science<\/a> professor at <a title=\"Deakin University\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deakin_University\">Deakin University<\/a>. Venkatesh attended extracurricular training classes for gifted students in the state mathematical olympiad program,<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Akshay_Venkatesh#cite_note-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup> and in 1993, whilst aged only 11, he competed at the 24th <a title=\"International Physics Olympiad\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Physics_Olympiad\">International Physics Olympiad<\/a> in <a title=\"Williamsburg, Virginia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Williamsburg,_Virginia\">Williamsburg, Virginia<\/a>, winning a bronze medal.<sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Akshay_Venkatesh#cite_note-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup> The following year, he switched his attention to mathematics and, after placing second in the <a class=\"new\" title=\"Australian Mathematical Olympiad (page does not exist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Australian_Mathematical_Olympiad&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Australian Mathematical Olympiad<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-10\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Akshay_Venkatesh#cite_note-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup> he won a silver medal in the 6th <a title=\"Asian Pacific Mathematics Olympiad\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asian_Pacific_Mathematics_Olympiad\">Asian Pacific Mathematics Olympiad<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-11\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Akshay_Venkatesh#cite_note-11\">[11]<\/a><\/sup> before winning a bronze medal at the 1994 <a title=\"International Mathematical Olympiad\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Mathematical_Olympiad\">International Mathematical Olympiad<\/a> held in Hong Kong.<sup id=\"cite_ref-AustralianIMOteams_2-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Akshay_Venkatesh#cite_note-AustralianIMOteams-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> He completed his secondary education the same year, turning 13 before entering the <a title=\"University of Western Australia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Western_Australia\">University of Western Australia<\/a> as its youngest ever student. Venkatesh completed the four year course in three years and became, at 16, the youngest person to earn of <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"First Class Honours\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_Class_Honours\">First Class Honours<\/a> in <a title=\"Pure mathematics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pure_mathematics\">pure mathematics<\/a> from the University.<sup id=\"cite_ref-AustralianIMOteams_2-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Akshay_Venkatesh#cite_note-AustralianIMOteams-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> He was awarded the J. A. Woods Memorial Prize as the most outstanding graduand of the year from the Faculties of Science, Engineering, Dentistry, or Medical Science.<sup id=\"cite_ref-12\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Akshay_Venkatesh#cite_note-12\">[12]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-13\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Akshay_Venkatesh#cite_note-13\">[13]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"Fields Medal\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fields_Medal\">Fields Medal<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-FieldsMedalIMU_4-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Akshay_Venkatesh#cite_note-FieldsMedalIMU-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-abc_care_23-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Akshay_Venkatesh#cite_note-abc_care-23\">[23]<\/a><\/sup> is commonly described as the Nobel Prize of mathematics,<sup id=\"cite_ref-NobelPrizeofMaths_24-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Akshay_Venkatesh#cite_note-NobelPrizeofMaths-24\">[24]<\/a><\/sup> and Akshay is becoming the second Australian (after <a title=\"Terence Tao\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Terence_Tao\">Terence Tao<\/a>)<sup id=\"cite_ref-GuardianFieldsMedal_6-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Akshay_Venkatesh#cite_note-GuardianFieldsMedal-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup> and the second person of Indian descent (after <a title=\"Manjul Bhargava\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manjul_Bhargava\">Manjul Bhargava<\/a>)<sup id=\"cite_ref-IndiaTVNews_7-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Akshay_Venkatesh#cite_note-IndiaTVNews-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup> to be so honoured.
