The statue is displayed at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Melbourne and has been on display since early June 2018. It is made of marble with a granite base, is 1.2 m high and weighs a massive 550Kg. It is installed in the Skills lab area, East wing level 1 of the building and according to the RACS college, is a true <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">work of art<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The college also has a collection of many rare and significant books in the field of medicine in its Cowlishaw Collection. A 1907 English translation of the works of Sushruta known as <em>Sushruta Samhita<\/em> by Kunjalal Bishnagratan is a part of that prestigious collection. According to the college, Sushruta is a foundation figure in Indian medicine and surgery and is hailed as the Indian counterpart of Hippocrates .&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">College museum which holds the translation of Sushruta Samhita is open to the public twice a week Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 12noon (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.surgeons.org\/about\/museum-and-art-gallery\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en-GB&amp;q=https:\/\/www.surgeons.org\/about\/museum-and-art-gallery\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1532056831753000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHYsma60Xl43cgzgC2hdM4xxYFrCQ\">check with the college here for latest details<\/a>). He also performed the country\u2019s first heart transplant after legalization of brain death. The first Heart- Lung Transplant, the first Paediatric Transplant and the first TMR (Laser Heart Surgery) were also performed by him<a href=\"http:\/\/www.frontierlifeline.com\/DrCherian.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He started his career in Christian Medical College Hospital, in Vellore as lecturer in Surgery. He did his FRACS in Cardiothoracic Surgery in 1973 from RACS, while being a migrant in Australia. He also worked in New Zealand and&nbsp; the United States. He worked as a Special Fellow in Paediatric Cardiac Surgery in Birmingham, Alabama under Dr. John W. Kirklin and in the University of Oregon under Dr. Albert Starr. He is an honourable Prof at the Yangzhou University, China.&nbsp;He was awarded Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1991.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dr Cherian is very fond of and inspired by Sushruta.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8143\" style=\"width: 364px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwip.com.au\/hcaold\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/sushruta-from-RACP-Statue.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8143\" class=\"wp-image-8143 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwip.com.au\/hcaold\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/sushruta-from-RACP-Statue.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"354\" height=\"496\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwip.com.au\/hcaold\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/sushruta-from-RACP-Statue.jpg 354w, https:\/\/wwwip.com.au\/hcaold\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/sushruta-from-RACP-Statue-150x210.jpg 150w, https:\/\/wwwip.com.au\/hcaold\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/sushruta-from-RACP-Statue-214x300.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 354px) 100vw, 354px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8143\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sushruta statue at RACP East wing 1, Melbourne<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Indian epic&nbsp;<i>Mah\u0101bh\u0101rata<\/i>&nbsp;lists Su\u015bruta amongst the sons of Vi\u015bv\u0101mitra, the legendary sage.<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sushruta#cite_note-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;<sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sushruta#cite_note-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;The&nbsp;<i><b>Bower Manuscript,<\/b><\/i>&nbsp;an early&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Birch bark document\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Birch_bark_document\">birch bark document<\/a>, dated to the&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Gupta period\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gupta_period\">Gupta era<\/a>&nbsp;(between the 4th and the 6th century),&nbsp;is an&nbsp;<a title=\"India\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/India\">Indian<\/a>&nbsp;text and is one of the oldest manuscripts known to have survived into the modern era.<sup id=\"cite_ref-mirskysas82_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bower_Manuscript#cite_note-mirskysas82-3\">[3]<\/a>&nbsp;<\/sup>It&nbsp;mentions the ancient Indian tradition of &#8220;garlic festival&#8221;, as well as a mention of sage&nbsp;<a title=\"Sushruta Samhita\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sushruta_Samhita\">Sushruta<\/a>&nbsp;in Benares (<a title=\"Varanasi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Varanasi\">Varanasi<\/a>).<sup id=\"cite_ref-dwtra_6-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bower_Manuscript#cite_note-dwtra-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;<i>Su\u015bruta-sa\u1e43hit\u0101<\/i>&nbsp;(works of Sushruta) is one of the most important surviving ancient treatises on medicine and is considered a foundational text of Medicine. The treatise addresses all aspects of general medicine, and the translator G. D. In the sign next to the statue, Patanjali Yogpeeth attributes the title of Maharishi to Sushruta, claims a floruit of 1500 BC for him, and dubs him the &#8220;founding father of surgery&#8221;, and identifies the Sushrut Samhita as &#8220;the best and outstanding commentary on Medical Science of Surgery&#8221;.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>The&nbsp;<i>Su\u015bruta-sa\u1e43hit\u0101<\/i>&nbsp;was known to the scholar D\u1e5b\u1e0dhabala (fl. 300\u2013500&nbsp;CE)<sup id=\"cite_ref-:1_7-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sushruta#cite_note-:1-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;and some concepts from it can&nbsp;be found in the&nbsp;<i><a title=\"Shatapatha Brahmana\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shatapatha_Brahmana\">\u015aatapatha-Br\u0101hma\u1e47a<\/a><\/i>, that is dated to the sixth century BCE,<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sushruta#cite_note-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Su\u015bruta-sa\u1e43hit\u0101, in its 184 chapters contains descriptions of<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1,120&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Illness\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Illness\">illnesses<\/a>,<\/li>\n<li>700&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Medicinal plant\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medicinal_plant\">medicinal plants<\/a>,<\/li>\n<li>64&nbsp;<a title=\"Mineralogy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mineralogy\">preparations from mineral sources<\/a>&nbsp;and<\/li>\n<li>57&nbsp;<a title=\"Animal product\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Animal_product\">preparations based on animal sources<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The text discusses surgical techniques of<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>making&nbsp;<a
